GTBank Launches Social Banking, Becomes Top Facebook Social Media Bank

Social banking. Nigeria GTBank, which already provides the most proactive social customer care on facebook, officially launched its facebook banking service for bank account opening.

GTBank Launches Social Banking, Becomes Top Social Media Bank on FacebookYesterday, Nigeria’s GTBank, Guaranty Trust Bank PLC, officially announced on facebook, where else, its social banking services, anywhere, anytime, any device.

I have to say I was slightly surprised to notice so much activity yesterday from the Nigerian media on GTBank’s social banking on facebook.  First, I thought it was old news.  I invite you to read my coverage of  the bank’s soft launch which took place in January 2013: ‘GTBank CEO Launches Secure Online Banking App on Facebook‘.

But two major differences this time around: 1. GTBank launched the ability to open an account on facebook, 2. it looks like GTBank is now promoting its broad and integrated approach to social media and its highly active and engaging presence on the popular facebook (with over 1 million likes), twitter (with 43k followers), linkedin and youtube.

I find the omission of google+ rather strange considering the bank will innovate once again tomorrow, when they’ll broadcast a google hangout about customer service and online banking…).


Open a bank account 100% on facebook

On this new account opening service, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos the bank said that the service would allow the public to open GTBank accounts and get customer service support. It quoted Mr Segun Agbaje, the Chief Executive Officer, as saying that the objective was to engage the public where they work, live or play.

According to Agbaje, in a couple of weeks, the bank will introduce new service options that include money transfers, airtime purchases and bills payments. He said that the bank was committed to the convenience of its customers and would continue to add value to its services.

Unarguably, GTBank is not the first bank to provide neither online banking features on facebook, India ICICI Bank was one of the first banks to introduce secure services, nor social customer care, New Zealand ASB Bank was the first bank to open a ‘virtual branch’ on facebook back in September 2010.

But this account opening service, if totally strait through, is revolutionary.

By the way, earlier this year Australia Sheila’s Wheels became allegedly the first insurance firm in the world to let people get a car insurance quote within facebook (they will give £20 to a charity if you subscribe to a policy initiated on facebook).

And in my opinion, GTBank’s level of pro activity and their willingness to answer customer queries, even (especially) the ones from their most angry and unsatisfied customers, publicly on facebook or twitter is truly unknown in the banking industry.

Long time ago, I was born in West Africa and even if I am French and I grew up essentially near Paris, I am delighted to see a West African bank pushing the envelope for social media in the banking industry.  Of course, South Africa FNB Bank under the leadership of its CEO, Michael Jordaan, is also pushing the envelope especially in the mobile banking space…
