InformationWeek 500 2012 Award Winners

78 Insurers And Bankers Make InformationWeek’s 500 2012 [Innovation]

The InformationWeek 500 list is an annual listing of businesses that are the most innovative users of technology. This year’s top 500 has 39 insurers and 39 bankers that continue to innovate to improve their services.

InformationWeek 500 2012 Award WinnersInsurers and bankers are usually not adaptive to technological changes that in an industry poll 64% of the respondents found that this statement is true. With InformationWeek’s 500 list for innovative users of technology however the insurance industry is prominently represented in the top 10 by Cigna Corp at seventh.

The banking industry on the other hand also appears within the top 20 with First Horizon National Corporation ranked 14th. The list contains 39 insurers and 39 bankers where the financial sector is considered a sleeper in terms of technology use adaptation.

According to Suren Gupta of Allstate, insurance companies are now keen on technology innovation in order for the companies to differentiate themselves from the rest of the field. This focus however is not limited to Allstate, USAA has developers that create and develop new products and enhancements to improve their services.

These new facts shine a new light on the financial industry as a whole. More and more members of the industry are investing in technological innovations, some even investing in an R&D lab, like Cigna, that is dedicated to innovation and developing innovative products.

Rob Preston, InformationWeek Vice President and Editor in Chief: “Clearly, the industry is putting a new emphasis on innovation. I’d put insurance in the same category as healthcare: once sleepy industries when it came to using IT, but now moving to the front of the pack given new market and regulatory realities.
